History
Onto-it is a farming solution developed by farmers for farmers. Based on their own needs and requirements, Stephen Lane and Alistair Lane developed Onto-it to provide farmers with a technology that provided usable and relevant data to help them in decision making on the farm.
Steve Lane is a hands-on, highly intuitive, farmer from Miranda on the Firth of Thames and has a significant track record of intensive cattle farming. Like many farmers, he instinctively knows what should be done around the farm. Steve’s cousin, Dr Alistair Lane, is a consummate analyst, filling the role of Onto-it’s Chief Information Officer. Their unlikely fusion of skills is the key to the Onto-it system and the ongoing development of the Onto-it business.
Steve has managed and worked on the family’s intensive beef finishing operation in Miranda since 1994. Previous to that he was shearing full time in NZ and overseas for almost six years. Under his management the business increased gross sales by nearly 400% and net production by 550%. Developing his methods into operational systems has enabled him to step off the farm.
While Steve brings a wealth of farming experience, Alistair provides a whole different set of skills. Dr Alistair Lane has over twenty years experience in computer applications development. His first IT development came about through his work as a research scientist in theoretical quantum physics. This provided wide ranging experience as he worked full time in New Zealand and the USA with researchers from various universities in New Zealand, Italy, Austria, the USA and AT&T Bell Labs. After a brief sojourn studying theology and music, Alistair became a full time professional IT consultant. He worked in a wide range of industries including finance, packaging, networking and telecommunications, science, education, electronics and health, gaining experience on most significant computer platforms and development systems. More recently, Alistair has focused on working in small innovative companies that led to his taking the position of CIO for Onto-it.
